About a year or so ago, I kept seeing articles in the paper about some guys who were restoring the Majestic Theator. It was always like.... they will be open in about a month....putting the last touches on.....
What happened? -Dave

What happened? -Dave The owner had a few old shows and a couple of live concerts, I wanted to go, but was always badtiming/plans etc...I don't know what happened since then, to make him close. I know he did live outside Streator. Maybe someone else can fill in some details for you DD.

Does anyone know where the Streator National Bank was originally located? I'm referring to its location before it built on the former site of the Opera House.
Also, does anyone know where the City National Bank and the First National Bank of Streator were located? I believe the City National Bank failed during the 1870s and the First National Bank went under in the 1890s.

My Dad used to work in the Murray Bldg. when the first picture was taken. Can anyone ever picture a finer looking gas station than Keen's in it's prime? It almost looks like it came out of an HO scale train layout. Look @ the cars there. I promise that when I win the Lotto, I am going to buy one of those big old Chryslers or Packards vintage post WWII. Nice pics Butch. -Dave

The Murray Building pictured above showed Fredman's Brothers Furniture as the main tennant. But did you know that this used to be the home of Montgomery Wards?

The Murray Building had a fire on the morning on Sept. 22,1930. The fire was contained to the elevator shaft and the storeroom of the Montgomery Wards in the basement of the building. The fire was discovered at 1am and the firemen "kicked in the door" on the Vermillion st side of the building to gain entrance to the building. The blaze was fought for two hours, with firemen pouring several streams into the elevator shaft to knock down the blaze. They also fought intense heat and dense smoke in the basement storeroom to contain the fire. Despite smoke damage throughout , the building and the store were open for business the next day. (Streator Daily Times Press,Sept.22,1930,p.1)

How sad these before and after photos are. This town really used to be something people wanted to visit, live, and raise their children in. Now nothing but trashy people, housing project filth and drugs rule this town!!!!
