Yes Dave, these buildings are still there. In this 1958 photo, the neon sign in the left building says "Hi Grade Chicks". No, it wasn't a strip joint. It was the Streator Hatchery. They sold animal feed and chickens. All of our neighbors, as did we, raised our own chickens. We ate the fresh eggs and butchered the chickens for meat. It was funny watching the chickens run around right after having their heads cut off. The neighbors behind us even had cows. Us kids used to watch them butcher the cows. The other building was the Northtown Furniture warehouse.

I was just explaining to my boyfriend the other day about how we would weigh & candle eggs on the farm, then bring them to one of the stores in town to sell. We used to take them to one of the feed stores. I remember one being at the top of the Main St. bridge, but I can't remember the name. I still have our old egg scale.

What does it mean to candle eggs? www.homestead.com/shilala/candling.htmlThe real pros can take a handful of eggs and move them around like a card shark handles cards. I did them one at a time.

Speaking of then & now pictures, I am going to show you the difference that we are undergoing between then... last Summer in Texas & Now here in Streator. THENNOWWe have definitely "down-sized". We acually like the Streator home better. It is just right for two folks getting on in years. -Dave

Dave, why do you always forget to use the spell-check function? I happen to know that DD rocks like a teenager! Age is not his issue. However, he does have some sort of obsession about his ears... thinks they're growing out of proportion. What he meant to say is that he's getting... Yanni ears! " (I never noticed that Yanni's ears are so... Yuge!)

I never noticed his ears either, but he's an awesome writer and musician. His specialty instrument players are too! I got to meet him in Chicago a few years back... I have a video of his "Live At the Acropolis" concert held in Rome, which was his dream to perform there.

NOW Your new house looks like a gem. You can tell it was lovingly cared for by its previous owners. Those are the houses that sell quickly in town.
