I believe that you are referring to the Ames Lumber Yard. Butch posted a picture of it in December of last year. Search this thread for Ames and you will find it.

These old pictures of Streator are depressing. It's hard to believe how much this town has gone downhill in the past 50 years are so.

DD, paradise?... maybe heaven?... I think W.P. Kinsella might take issue with that. Either way, it's all in one's perspective. As Pops Dale once said... "It's hard for a bullhead to know how nice the Vermilion feels, until he spends some time in a live-well." (I think it was Job who shared that bit of wisdom with me.)

Sorry to disagree. I live here now & I am in heaven. This is such better town that it has ever been. I guess I need to join SACCI now...... -Dave Its a better town just by having you in it, Dave. Back at-cha sweetie! I didn't come here to relive my past. Heck I've been gone for 35 yrs. If Streator had remained the same , it would have been creepy. My new neighbor & the same person that sold me this house asked me what drew me to live in Streator & what were the main changes. #1) We had to move to a place that had the medical infrastructure for retired old farts like we are. I noticed that a lot of the new & modern buildings (replacing vacant lots BTW), were medical related. #2) The housing stock is a lot better. Someone told me that due to the ability to take out 2nd Morts, there has been a boom in getting these old houses fixed up. Well they never looked better & the whole town therefore looks sooo much better than it did when I was growing up here. #3) It really is a "Peaceful Town on the Prairie". This MAY be due to the fact that it is no longer a factory town (as it is with all the towns of the post WWII era that had factories). Face it. This was a pretty tough town in the 50's & 60's. I am sure that if some of you mention Streator to an outsider, they will comment on how it was a rough place to live & an easy place to get into a fight. Hard people working at hard jobs 24/7 & playing hard when they got off work. #4) And this is just for a guy like me who came from a place like Texas. I like FOUR SEASONS. I like my friendly neighbors & the people that live here today. I like NOT living in suburbia which I have come to think of as a large apt. house with lawns, yet where nobody knows their neighbors & doesn't want to. I like sitting out on my lil porch & watching the kids play & the adults BS on the street, myself included. I like the neighborhood bars, where a guy can go & watch a Cubs/Bears Illinois game & sip on a few brews & not worry about getting into a fight. I also still like my church here better than the suburbia church where it was all about the money & making contacts....I had to leave it, it just was not right. Finally, as an example of how nice the people are here, I was shopping for some food & the person on the other side of the counter made a face at me that gave me the heads up, that what I was going to buy sucked & offer me another ,better choice. But not a word was said...... -Dave

This is the view that I had looking out the front window of my home in 1958. If my home was still there, I would have this view now.
