Hey all you train Fans/Freaks. I was reading in the Streator Hist. Soc. newsletter that no less than 12 interurban trains left Streator every day for Ottawa in 1912. They started @ 6:40 A.M. & the last train left Streator @ 12:20 A.M. that night.
Here is my question. Where was the depot for the interurban trains? -Dave

Dave, Are you asking because you don't know or are you asking to see if anyone else knows? I know where it was located at, but do not want to give it away if you are looking for an answer from someone else.

It was in the 100 block of East Hickory St. That would be the same block as the Masonic Lodge & Elks club as well as the old hotel/bus station @ Bloomington St. I wonder...did they have a place to turn the train there or, most probably there may have been dual controls front & rear. The "Story of Streator" says that the line ran straight from Ottawa on a bed comparable to the steam railroads. I would love to get a map showing where the tracks ran. I hear there was an amusement area between Streator & Ottawa where people could picnic & swim. My guess is that the interurban train used the old bus station @ Bloomington & Hickory. In this same book, there is a sketch of the old fair grounds. It shows the interurban tracks to be next to the C.B. & Q. They share a platform @ the East side of the fairgrounds. I am curious as to how the tracks got from that position North of the city to Hickory St...........Well I'll try to do some checking. -Dave

Dave, I have an old map somewhere that showed the route of the interurban. It shows the route it ran through the city. I will look for it and post it as soon as I can find it.

Now that should be really interesting. The interurban line in Dallas got pretty funky the closer it got to the downtown area. Out in the country, it was straight as an arrow. But that was down here.....

Nice very nice. When was this taken? I can't remember if I peeked into the windows when I was taking pictures of the depot last Summer. (all those not-too-subtle NO TRESPASSING signs around there got me a bit antsy.) -dave

I don't know when the picture was taken. I found it on this website:http://atsf.railfan.net/depots I remember waiting for the train with my grandmother there for a day trip to Chicago. Such a shame that the building is sitting there. Would make a great Historical museum for the city.

Dwight uses it's old depot as a modern municipal building. Pontiac uses its old depot part as an AMTRAK station & most of the rest as a restaurant. Joliet's station is still there. It is unique in that the main lines of the old Santa Fe, Rock Island & C&A cross there on an elevated platform. (2nd story level) Also they have cleaned up the area & there is a pretty new minoe league ball park across the street. Bloomington/ Normal has a brand new AMTRAK sation that shares a parking lot with the municipal bldg. I think that Streator's depot could be put to use as a museum for "The Streator Canteen". Other ideas are for some other public use. Sub station for the town or township. Heck. It could be used as a restaurant. I magine havin a big ole thick steak & watching a train go by. -Dave

I am riding the rails again & when I get home, I will post the pix i took of the railroad stations. I could kick myself for missing the Joliet station. The Pontiac station is under remodeling. St Louis looks the same, but i got an decent picture of their new Busch Stadium nearby. The stations here in Canada are pretty neat. I have some of the Winnipeg Station & hope to get Vancouver tomorrow as well as Toronto later this week. Penn station in NYC is below the Madison Square Garden...all under ground. I would love to visit Grand Central if I have time later this month. -Dave

Riding on the City of New Orleans, Illinois Central Monday morning rail Fifteen cars and fifteen restless riders, Three conductors and twenty-five sacks of mail. All along the southbound odyssey The train pulls out at Kankakee Rolls along past houses, farms and fields. Passin' trains that have no names, Freight yards full of old black men And the graveyards of the rusted automobiles. Good morning America how are you? Don't you know me I'm your native son, I'm the train they call The City of New Orleans, I'll be gone five hundred miles when the day is done.
