Somebody recently boasted that Da Lee's has great chicken. I went there tonight to verify, and can now wholeheartedly attest to the accuracy of the claim. On top of the excellent meal, I got to meet one of my Streator heros! I had the distinct privilege of speaking with the identical twin brother of the young man who caught the giant catfish. He kindly took a few minutes out of his work schedule to answer a few questions. After humbly admitting that the monster was his brother's trophy, he explained that it was caught on conventional line and bait. (I suspected they'd been 'hogging'.) All in all, it was a great evening, spent with my favorite person in the universe, eating world-class yardbird, with a celebrity encounter to boot! (It just doesn't get any better than that.)

They will deep fry pork chops too.! They are very good. I am not sure if they are on the menu or not, but when I ask them to do it they do. We usually order carry out.

Jess Wunman, I was that "somebody," wasn't I? The lover of that chicken? It was I, wasn't it? I'm glad you liked it.

C'mon Seth, I don't know if I was the first, but I did say their chicken and other food, mmmmmmmm(cheeseburgers...home-made patties) were very good. Check out the Broiled Cod too! I have followed the cook, Janet around where ever she works for a looonnggg time. I think she's the best cook in Streator!

I agree on the cod, I had it and it was excellent. I also had the opportunity to sample the chicken, as my dinner partner ordered it. I agree with all of you, it was outstanding!! We had only half an hour to get something last night (wanted to get to the movie) and the place was too busy!!! I wasn't upset, just glad that they have such a good business. Hopefully we'll have the good cooking around for a long time.
Mr.R. 'tests' restaurants by how good the burgers are, so we are looking forward to some good burgers, very soon.

A Streator Evening It's a hot summer night, my mom gets us kids ready and we climb into my dad's 54 Ford. We are going out to eat to our favorite place! My dad backs out of the driveway and we head off. In no time we are there, the ROOT BEER STAND! We pull into a parking spot and my dad shuts the engine off. Soon a girl comes up to my dad's window and takes our order. In no time she's back with a tray full of food. My dad cranks his window up a couple inches and the girl hangs the tray on the glass and sets the support on the car door. My dad hands us the frosty mugs of root beer first and reminds us not to spill it. There are no drink holders in his '54. We take a little sip and set the glass mugs on the floor. He then hands me my hamburger and french fries. I ask for an extra cup of ketchup. Mmmmm... nothing tastes better than a hamburger and fries in the backseat of my dad's car. And that good old fashioned root beer is thirst quenching. We finally all finish and my dad turns his headlights on, signaling the girl that we are finished. She comes out and takes the tray off the window, with me wondering why the tray does not break the glass. We pull out of the Root Beer Stand lot but we know there is more. We head for the ICE CREAM STAND! ;D

Thank you Butch, for sharing your family outing with me, I truly enjoyed every moment of the dinner and dessert. Is the picture an oldie of what is presently our Dairy Queen? The picture, is great, loved the sweet children's faces.

Hi Eva, This is a July 1960 photo of Streator's Dairy Queen. Note the Northtown Furniture Company next door and the large neon sign they had out by the road, which back then was 2 lane. When they widened North Bloomington to 4 lane, they cut off this front area of the Dairy Queen forcing the opening of the side walk up window. Behind the photographer in that photo would be another of Streator's fine restaurants. Remember "The White House" restaurant which sat where the Streator National Bank's north branch is now, just north of Woody's place? The White House was truly fine dining with cloth tablecloths and low lighting atmosphere.

I have little recollection of Streator history, as I first visited our fair town, in 1971, and only moved here May of '02, so there is much I don't 'remember'.
The White House sounds lovely. I have encountered a couple of spots with the same name. My father, while on maneuvers during WWII, met my mother, who was working in the White House, in a small south Arkansas town.
I wish situations would allow the return of such nice establishments in Streator, but for now, we can let you help us remember when.
Thanks,

Thanks again Butch. This site is like stepping into a time machine. By the way, I think I have figured out a way to trace down those old photos of Streator owned by the guy in Kankakee.
The White House was a special place. The Indian Acres, when it was owned by the Cravatta's, was also good.

Butch,
Exactly right, except it was my dad's '53 Buick! You were in the back seat and I didn't know it! Frosty mugs were the best, but how 'bout those megaphone-shaped waxed cardboard containers with the pull-off top disk for take-home?

There was just something about drinking that root beer out of those big, thick, heavy, frosted, glass mugs. It tasted sooooo good! Remember the baby mugs? Miniature versions of the big mugs and baby beers were free!

Hey I just found this site...wow am I getting addicted!
I am so glad that I speant 2 years carhopping! It surely will be a thing of the past that I will tell my girls about. How their dad used to pull up in his hot camaro just to see me. I served alot of rootbeer...and people always were stealing the free baby mugs.
Mr. Sowder's taught me ALOT about work ethics. RUN don't walk, grab up garbage on every run, smile and be courteous...being presentable. I remember when nail polish was STRICTLY forbidden, but I made a deal with him. I told him he would never catch me with chipped nails, and if he did I would remove it on the spot. I had polish remover at work. I remember his frown when I shaved off one side of my head (and shaved in a Christmas tree, complete with ornaments glued on.) He was tough, and I can't believe he's gone. Rest in Peace.
