I found these 2 old photos of a train derailment and resulting fire. They are marked "Streator, IL." on them. I cannot identify where these would have been taken. Does anyone recognize the area?

Have you tried taking them to the historical society? I bet someone there could help. If you can catch Bill, he's a walking history book.

I think they are of the old C&A bridge near downtown. The tracks that ran just north of St Mary's school to the Illinois Central at Wenona & then eventually to Lacon, Varna & Metamora/Washington. Just as a WAG, I would say there is a chance that the newer pilings could be the Main St. bridge.
ORRRRRRR
It could be the Santa Fe bridge south of town w/ the new bridge going up then.

Dave, this appears to be in the 40s or 50s. The new bridge out south was started long after that, and there are no tracks near the Main Street bridge.

I agree the pilings look like those by St. Mary's. The mixture of the old stone and newer concrete just doesn't seem right. There were two bridges over the Vermillion. The first one ran just north of St. Mary's, the second bridge ran through Riverview. Kinda neat, if you stand where tracks for the second bridge were, you can see St. Mary's Church. The first pilings, just north of St. Mary's were stone.
Wasn't the Main St. bridge put up in the 1930's?
I think they dug out a "backwash" north of Riverview...needed dirt for the embankment...and found an old cemetery.....Stoney Point? Joanie

But this was double track and there wasn't double track going through St. Mary's. The only double track going through Streator that I can think of is the Santa Fe.

I am not sure I have the right area, but there did use to be tracks near the main st bridge. North of the bridge there is an old train tressel that we used to walk to go to the pool back in the day. I remember trains running on it too and we had to race to get across. (stupid kids and I hope no one ever tries that) I do not know what tracks they were however. The tressel I am talking about can be seen if you walk down to the shoreline accross main st from Streator Foods. You can see it cross the river just at the bend to the left.
