Yesterday, as I was walking along the beach, I thought that I had entered a time warp. I found out later that replicas of the Nina and Pinta were heading to the Michigan City Yacht club, a few miles south of us. I guess that I had better pull out my copy of Morison's "Admiral of the Ocean Seas."

I don't know if they are the same replicas or not, but they have been docked in Ottawa on the Illinois River for several years in a row.

I checked out the schedule and they are to be in Alton, IL Aug. 25 - Aug.30. The only way to Alton from Lake Michigan is down the Illinois River. (Well, maybe not the ONLY way, but the only way they will get there by August 25th!)

There is no question; it is the same ship. We will check it out tomorrow, and I will take my own pictures.

About 9 years ago we were able to tour them when they were docked near Ottawa. I should say Jess took our 4 year old grandson on the tour, and I admired from the bench, as I held our infant grand daughter, They were magnifient to look at. Another reason to be awed by the folks who made the journey. Thanks for reminding me of a very happy day.

I always enjoyed reading about Columbus, Magellan and Drake. Those were the days. It's too bad that Erickson and the other pre-Columbus guys did not leave a written record.

We saw the ships today, and I will post some photos tomorrow.
While we were on the Nina, I was puzzling over a knot on one of the riggings. I asked a young guy wearing a "crew" shirt about the knot. Obviously not a nautical guy, he said that it was maybe a "square knot." When I told him that it was not a square knot, he said that he had no idea, maybe just a "knot knot." I couldn't resist. I said I thought that it might be a Gordian Knot."
He agreed.

Beautiful pictures. I have a few from when they were in Ottawa, but they are filed away somewhere.
