was surprised to learn Trapp's had been around that long.
...from 1886 History of La Salle County, Illinois volume 1, page 654 John Trapp, proprietor of Trapp's saloon, corner of Hickory and Bloomington streets, was born in Bavaria, Germany, Nov. 16, 1846. He was reared on a farm until his sixteenth year, when he went to Wurtzburg to learn the butcher's trade at which he worked until he was nineteen years old. He then remained at home till he reached his majority, when he was conscripted in the German army, and participated in the war between Germany and France. After his discharge from the army he, in July, 1872, immigrated to America, landing at New York, July 26. He came to Peru, La Salle Co., Ill., where he worked at the butcher's trade until 1873, when he removed to Streator and followed his trade until 1883, when he engaged in his present business. He was married in the fall of 1872 to Miss Eva Race, a native of Bavaria. They have a family of six sons and one daughter---John, Paulena, William, George, Charles and Frank. Mr. Trapp is a member of Beethoven Lodge, No 474, I. O. O. F., of which he is Noble Grand.

No wonder he had the best tasting beef sandwiches around. I would have never guessed it all started with being a butcher.
