Gotta love the saddle shoes the young girls are wearing. Also, the babushka on baba.

This is from an 1892 Plat book. Looks like La Rue Street on the south East to Eastern Ave. North to First St. and West to the Railroad Tracks.
Between La Rue and Broadway is "Broadway's Second Add." East is Christian Baker's Add. and C. Baker's Second Add. North (across First St. is Prairie Creek Add. Between Porter, Grant and Johnson...there is just "Sub Div." written across it.

The 1876 plat book only shows the layout of the addition, no street names.
Johnson and Grant were probably from Presidents.
Porter, might have been named after Robert Kerr Porter Plumb. He was a nephew of Col. Ralph's and a lawyer. His brother, John, was considered like a son to Col. Ralph. Since Col. Ralph had no sons, he took a special interest in his nephews, John, Fawcett and Porter among others.

Hey Y'all,
What a great response to this thread!
We've been busy down here in the "Rocket City" and have not been able to make any contributions to the thread for awhile but y'all are doing very good with comments and photos.
I hope to be free of what I'm working on NASA, "International Lunar Lander Test Bed" in a few days and hope to relax and be able to join in on the "Painter's Addition" thread.
Keep up the memories of "Painter's Addition" and May God Bless.
Best regards, John P.

Great to see you back! I had hoped it wasn't illness keeping you away, and just glad to hear it was work.

I was given this photo and thought to add it to this Painter's Addition general topic. Maybe someone will know the men in the photo, I didn't know. The third man in the photo is Pipe Salata. The forth man in the photo is Yankee Handzo. Who are the first two men. You can see the Koral tavern and the Koral merchandise store in the background. Also a young girl in the background, but couldn't make out who it was. The cars during that time period are great to see to. Enjoy the photo, Diana

This is diffenetly an old Painter's Addition Photo of neighbor hood children. I would say it was taken in the late 30's. It is a photo of Pete, Frank and Margaret Chorba (Burckitt). Also Tom and Pipe (Andy) Salata. This photo is priceless! Looks like the children are holding their yard pets. This is a photo of Alter Boys with Mon. Dzurio. They are John Hornick, Ray Soltis, Mon. Dzurio, Tom Salata and Mike Vargovick. I was told many of the boy's in this photo are of Neighbor hood children of Painter's Additon. At this time I havn't been able to know names. Does anyone see someone they know?

Thanks for the pix. Like John, I don't know any of them. However, my father was an insurance salesman back in the 50's & Painters Addition was his territory. He would know a lot of those folks if he were still alive.

Today I spoke to "Cowboy Yurch Jr." Yes, another Cowboy. He spoke to me about his father, being nicknamed, Cowboy Yurch. Cowboy Yurch Jr.'s first name is Steve. He told me that his father use to take their cow to the field of grass at the end of Johnson Street, running along Iowa Avenue to graze every morning. He'd stake that cow, and in the evening bring her in. So he was given the name "Cowboy Yurch." Now his son Carry's on the name, in honer to his father. Steve also updated me with a few new names, and corrected ones from the list of nicknames. Greek Yurch (John) Biffo Galik (John) Biffo Dutko Yankee Handzus Sting Martin (Stephen) Hi Fi Fialko (Andy) Puggy Tkach Heres another Bar photo, taken at Hunters/Korals bar. Does anyone know the man and the lady? I think the lady is Sue Gula, we use to live right next door to her on Johnson st. She was a nice lady, always making Rosak and bringing some over to our house.
