Sorry Butch, I meant you and not Tiger on the previous post. Can't you reach the same road to the Moon Creek Bridge from the north? By Columbus Rd or the one just south of the overpass on 23, then head west and south? I'll have to check it out sometime.

Sorry Butch, I meant you and not Tiger on the previous post. That's OK, I've been called worse! Can't you reach the same road to the Moon Creek Bridge from the north? That old bridge is right at the west end of Moon Creek Road where it used to intersect with what I call "Reading Road" which runs north and south. In this view you can see the "T" intersection that used to be a 4 way intersection. Just to the right is the creek that this bridge crossed.

I think that the bridge that you were asking about was the old Kangley bridge just North of that town & next to the old rendering works. It was one way & had a "dogleg" in the middle. (My Map of Illinios shows it to be called route 29. I grew up calling it Kangley road.) - Dave In this aerial view of the Kangley Bridge, you can see the old roadway leading up, from the south, to where the old bridge was. From the angle of the roadway, it looks like there could have been a "dogleg" in the bridge.

Dum Dave I dont'r remember what the "Rendering works" was, Is that why the water is so brown and yucky there? Some kind of runoff from it? The rendering works was where old hosey's & cows & other animals went to the "Big Pasture in the Sky" They came out as mostly glue, leather, I believe & possibly doggy food for Fido. (Maybe even some made it to foreign countries as "meat products" or this country as "Chinese food") I can tell you this, the place STUNK TO HIGH HEAVEN!. My guess is that the State or Feds closed it down when they tried to clean up the river. - Dave

The old bridge over in Hennepin coming down. I remember crossing this bridge many times on my way to "The Ranch House" over in Bureau for some fine dining.

We, the folks of the UMC church, used to go out to Miller's Farm out by Sandy Ford. There would be a big pot luck dinner & then a hay ride. Mr Miller always took is down an old dirt road that followed the River southward on the south/west side of the river. The smells were fantastic. I used to hang around an old iron bridge that went to The Owionized Club house & the Polish cemetary. Go down Oakley & turn left at the Shay's mansion. This was before the Kangley/Oakley Ave. bridge was made. We would climb under it and lay on the metal bars. The bridge would make such a loud noise that I could hear it at night from where I lived a good mile or more away. It has been replaced. I was bald, had one tooth & played the banjo back then. -Dave

Ah yes "The Ranch House". Wonderful food. Great drive. Pop had a Caddy in the late 60's. We drove over there & celebrated the birth of their 1st grand child. I got to have a beer. (Mom didn't like it, but it was a special event. It was also her birthday.) I went over there again a year or so later to celebrate Mom's birthday. I had a date. I had a VERY nice date. If you look at the photo of the Kangley Bridge, you will se two roads "T" into it. The lower "T" is where I put the Rambler on top of the snow. (After have consumed several beers) The second "T" goes to the farm house I went to for help. They were drunker than we were & most helpful. -Dave

This is the "NEW" bridge over the Vermilion River on Bridge St. about 1911. They straightened out the curve from the old bridge. The old bridge made a curve to the south.

We could eat. I grew up off of Oakley Ave. We would go and play at the bridge that went from Oakley to the Owen's lodge, Polish cemetery & another cemetery. There were wild blackberry & redberry bushes to feast on. There was an apple tree to lazy around on & eat apples. Also my Dad had some vacant land in the area & he had planted pear trees, so we ate pears. Most folks did not mind you having a few grapes of the grape arbors in the area. Wild Asparagus grew along the road sides. My folks would get out & pick some for supper. Later, my Dad had a small garden with the best tasting tomatoes. My kids looked at me like I was crazy when I walked up plucked a tomatoe off the vine & ate it. They had no idea then that vegetables DO NOT ALWAYS COME FROM A CAN! lol. -DD
