This will be such an interesting thread. Some people complain about how many gas stations we have now, but did you know that in 1935 we had 35 businesses that sold gas? At that time there were not as many vehicles and citizens did not travel like we do today.

We had a bus service company in Streator after WWII. I don't know when it started, the buses ended up in Ligori's junk yard for several decades. I think they were scrapped in about 1955 or 56. I think I have seen an old picture of main street with trolleys....horse drawn? -Dave

The book, 125 YEARS A CELEBRATION" 1868-1993 has a lot of old neat pics in it. On pages 94 & 95 it shows an electric street car, and the Yellow Bus Company busses.

In 1919 Streator was run by a Mayor and Aldermen. The city was divided into 7 ward, with 2 aldermen for each ward. In that year the city had a total of 49 grocers. A lot of them were located in residential homes.

In the 1935 directory at 402 W. Fifth St. is a listing for Streator Detention Hospital and Streator Incinerator. Does anyone have any information on these?

I remember the Streator Incinerator building. We used to play around it when we were kids. It had a long ramp leading up to it where the trucks would drive up and dump their loads. We would ride our bikes up and down the ramp. The building was a large brick building with a tall, round, brick smokestack. It was located where Camelot Manor is now.

Thanks for the infor Butch. Now, we just need to know if someone remembers the hospital. The name "Detention" almost sounds like it would be for criminals.

The only place that I can think of was a nursing home at the end of Chicago St. on Richards St. It was called the Edgetown Nursing Home. It was where the housing is now on Richards St.

That probably wasn't it because of the address of 402. It was also listed under "hospitals" in the directory, with Fred Hepner as superintendant. He was also in charge of the incinerator.
