MnM, the "fog" that you see is smoke from a nearby brush fire. Here is another view of the main building.

The building in Kernan was a pumping station for the Sinclair Oil Company. It was powered by coal. A similar building still stands in Ransom. The Ransom pumping station, however, belonged to the Stanoline (Standard Oil Line) and was powered by diesel. Both are near the Santa Fe tracks, but there was never any siding to the station in Ransom; the Kernan pumping station may have had a siding at one time for the delivery of coal by rail--or perhaps the coal simply came by truck or cart from Streator. These pumping stations were along the Santa Fe because the pipeline companies ran their easements for the pipelines in the railroad's right of way.
The Ransom pumping station--where my grandfather worked in the 1920s and 1930s--generated a low hum that could be heard all over town. Sometime in the 1930s an explosion in the pumping station hurled a flywheel and other large pieces of metal several hundred yards into the village, but no one was hurt.

Those buildings would look great on a model RR layout. Nice pic .-Dave
