Dell's, now Shaw's...wasn't that Solon's funeral home. I think the building was org. designed to be a funeral chapel. The room in the back had a drain in the center of the floor. Kubick(sp?) had a TV repair shop in that room in the 1950-60s. County Cupboard was Ruth's Rest. in the 1960s, then Betty's Rest. Aunt Betty kept the sign "Ruth's" for some time before she changed it. Joanie JOANIE when was that Solon's Funeral Home when they celebrated their (I think ) 100 yr. anniversary at their current location? Speaking of that block though, what can you tell me about about the corner where Price's Bakery was located at across from the Episcopalian Church a few doors down? We have done an investigation in that building and do know that it was a livery in the back with the horses delivering goods............... but so much of the info is vague though. Not that we have checked the information out that clearly since nothing really happened there with our investigation, but would be nice to know though. Name please........................ thanks, Kay

Kay, are you talking about the building on the NE corner of Bridge & Vermillion? I can remember going in there as a kid with my parents and it was a feed store. I think it was Barickman's.

Solon's had a furniture store on Main st....that is how they got into the undertaking business. The coffins would be on display, along with their household furniture. They had a room in the back where the inquests would be held. Then they moved. I think the pictures in Story of Streator were from the place on Vermillion St. I will check on that this week.
I remember Price's being a hatchery in the late 40's. My uncle, Joe Seroka had the gas station across the street.

That building was called Pettingel's back in the early 1900s. There's a picture of it in the 1912 book "Story of Streator."
