I saw an old building in Kernan made of brick with a large smoke stack. Anyone have any information on what it was? -Dave

It was Enterprise Industries. All I remember about it was that it was some type of welding shop. All the high school seniors who took welding at school and wanted to work 3-11 shift after school got jobs there. It was the bottom of the job pool (very poor working conditions) from what the boys who worked there told me.

I used to work there after school, a kid in a man's world.......lol, the money was GREAT. From what I remember my father telling me the building was originally built and used as some sort of pumping station, there used to be a building on the west side of Ransom that was used for the same a pumping station. I'm guessing crude oil was being pumped but that is just a guess. Interesting that these buildings are along the railroad also.

Was it true that one side of the building was opened up to the elements?

Yes galsal one building, the one with the smoke stack , didn't have a roof or windows when I worked there. It was called" the birdhouse", because of all the birds that made it home. It was not uncommon to be welding in the winter and get shocked because your leather gloves were wet. Somedays we were sent home because it was raining too hard to work. Aahhhh what a character builder.......lol

My boyfriend at the time worked there for a short time before being hired at Dependable. I thought he told me about freezing to death in the winter. I would like to see some of our young 17 & 18 yr. olds work under those conditions!

...Aahhhh what a character builder... You're right fishman. Some of my jobs were like that, and they obviously had a profound effect. I often overhear people compliment me, when they think I'm out of earshot. It's usually something like, "Geez, that guy's a character!"

What were the other 2 buildings used for? The building on the right is the only one I'm familiar with.

Ok DD..... we would love to check that building out and do an investigation of it too. BUT........ who owns it though now, the town or some independent person? If anyone knows we would appreciate contact info then. We never trespass and always get documents signed by the owners to do any investigations on any property............ M
